Pret a lire? The company that has added more words to Tracee's French vocabulary than a four year course at the Doc Marten Comprehensive is in massive trouble. It announced yesterday (Thursday 27 August) that 2,800 employees are to be made redundant, almost half its staff, and that 30 stores (so, all but ten of those around Liverpool Street station in London) are to close. The company announced that while it had seen a significant improvement in August, trade across the UK is still down 60 per cent compared to a year ago. Weekly sales in August were £5.5 million, only slightly above the level seen ten years ago, when the company was “considerably smaller.”
